History of EECALD Project

The project has been funded to increase the capacity of aged care services to respond to needs of older people from Eastern Europe and improve their access to aged care services.

 

Eastern Europeans for the purpose of this project are defined as people of: Belorussian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Serbian and Ukrainian background.

 

Project covers Metropolitan Sydney, Illawarra and Hunter Regions. We also can provide information to people from rural and regional NSW.

 

Access to services, information and support provided by EE CALD Project is free.
Project activities include:

  • Support and information for individual aged care consumers and their families

  • Community Education activities

  • Support for aged care providers

  • Development of information in community languages and cultural awareness resources

 

The objectives of the projects are:

  • Assist individual from Eastern European background to make better informed choices when accessing aged care services.

  • Increase awareness of community members about Australian aged care system

  • Improve the capacity of aged care services to respond to needs of older people from Eastern European communities.

 

Assistance offered to individual consumer and their families:

  • Information about community and residential aged care which is relevant to their needs

  • Support in navigating through the aged care system so people can make better choices when deciding what services and support they want to access.

  • When possible, link people with services which are able to meet their cultural and linguistic needs

 

Community Education Activities:

 

  • Community education activities about aged care services and healthy ageing.

  • Development information resources in community languages.

  • Supporting communities wanting to establish partnerships with aged care providers.

 

Assistance and support aged care providers:

  • Linking aged care providers with Eastern European communities

  • Offering practical assistance to:

    • Promote organisation’s service to Eastern Europeans consumers

    • Develop culturally appropriate strategies to introduce concept of CDCs, enablement and healthy ageing to Eastern European consumers and their carers

  • Supporting aged care providers to address cultural issues and care needs of Eastern European consumers and their carers by:

    • Provision of information

    • Expert advice

    • Delivery of cultural sensitivity trainings

    • Access to community language resources: books, DVDs, newspapers, communication cards, translated materials
